The First Official Mother’s Day

President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first official Mother’s Day on May 9, 1914. This proclamation was a proclamation was particularly meaningful to Ana Jarvis, who several years prior had started a campaign to establish a national Mother’s Day holiday to remember her own mother who had recently died. Jarvis wanted a day where all mother’s - past and present - could be honored.

Today Mother’s Day is a popular holiday, where gifts and cards are sent around the world.

The official flower for Mother’s Day is the carnation. Pink carnations are for living mothers, and white carnations are for those who have passed on.

Myth: Eating turkey makes you drowsy.

Fact: Most doctors actually believed this one until they researched it. The thing is, a chemical in turkey, called tryptophan is known to cause drowsiness. But turkey doesn’t contain any more of it than does chicken or beef. This myth is fueled by the fact that turkey is often eaten with a colossal holiday meal, often accompanied by alcohol — both things that will make you sleepy and that this pundit has been driven into turkey-lovers heads for quite some time.

Sleepy turkey…be free!

Oh No Santa! No More Ho Ho Ho?

According to the Australian free press, Santa Claus’s in Sydney Australia have been told not to use the traditional “ho ho ho” greeting because it may be offensive to women because, it was too close the the U.S’s slang term “ho”, which is another term for prostitute.

The Australian Santa’s have been instructed to use “ha ha ha”, instead.

Can you believe this or what? I used to always say, “what is this country coming to?”, because crap like this seems to only happen in the U.S. I guess, now I have to say, “what is this WORLD coming to?”, instead.

Make it be noted tho, that of course, the U.S. had something to do with this tho lol.

Next thing to be banned, I’m sure, is any references to Santa’s sack ;0)

Give the XO Laptop - Great Charity Idea

Starting today, Monday, Nov. 12, U.S. and Canadian residents will have a really cool opportunity to add charity to their holiday shopping lists. The “One Laptop Per Child Organization” is offering a unique opportunity to purchase two XO laptops—one that will be given to a child in a developing country, and the other to keep or donate locally.

For all U.S. donors who participate in the Give One Get One program, T-Mobile is offering one year of complimentary HotSpot access.

It’s called “Give One Get One” and it costs $399, which will be good until Dec 31st. The XO laptops are  laptops designed for education and connecting kids in developing countries who have never worked with a computer before.

The energy-efficient computers have hi-res screens, cameras, and p2p wireless communication capabilities built in. They run on free open source software with 1GB flash memory and a low power processor so it can be easily maintained. This unique laptop can be powered by solar energy, a foot pump, or  pull-string powered chargers!
