The First Official Mother’s Day

President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the first official Mother’s Day on May 9, 1914. This proclamation was a proclamation was particularly meaningful to Ana Jarvis, who several years prior had started a campaign to establish a national Mother’s Day holiday to remember her own mother who had recently died. Jarvis wanted a day where all mother’s - past and present - could be honored.

Today Mother’s Day is a popular holiday, where gifts and cards are sent around the world.

The official flower for Mother’s Day is the carnation. Pink carnations are for living mothers, and white carnations are for those who have passed on.

The Top 10 Most Populated US States

Have you ever wondered what states have the most people living in them? Well I have. I am not really sure what made this question come to mind, but after some research, it was pretty easy to compile the list. Just because these states are the most populated, I don’t think, however, that it makes them the most popular. I am sure there are a lot of factors other than population, that determines a state’s popularity, even though I am not surprised by most of the top 10:

  • California - 36,553,000
  • Texas - 23,904,000
  • New York - 19,298,000
  • Florida - 18,251,000
  • Illinois -  12,853,000
  • Pennsylvania - 12,433,000
  • Ohio - 11,467,000
  • Michigan - 10,072,000
  • Georgia - 9,545,000
  • North Carolina - 9,061,000

These numbers have been rounded up or down to the nearest thousand, and are based on the numbers from the 2007 US census.
