Recycling Hits an all Time High
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, recycling has continued to rise across the United States.
Today, 50% of all paper is recycled, along with 35% of all plastic soft drink and water bottles are recycled. In addition, 45% of aluminum beer and soda cans are being recycled.
Perhaps, the biggest surprise, is those of appliances, in which there has been a 67% increase in recycling.
Great job America!
The “Halo Effect” of Health Foods
There’s currently a rising popularity in healthy foods, but obesity rates are going up at the same time.
Researchers at Cornell University set out to determine why we are eating healthier foods and still gaining weight.
They’ve found that it is most likely due to “health halo effect”, meaning when consumers hear that there is a fast food restaurant that has low calorie foods, they over generalize that all or most of the foods in the restaurant are healthy. And that is just not the case.
In fact, consumers estimated that sandwiches from healthier fast food restaurants contain 35% fewer calories than they actually had. And not only that, as a result of their underestimation, consumers then felt it was ok to load up on beverages, side dishes and desserts containing up to 130% more calories then when the main course they ordered was advertised as healthy, as compared to when it was not.
Give the XO Laptop - Great Charity Idea
Starting today, Monday, Nov. 12, U.S. and Canadian residents will have a really cool opportunity to add charity to their holiday shopping lists. The “One Laptop Per Child Organization” is offering a unique opportunity to purchase two XO laptops—one that will be given to a child in a developing country, and the other to keep or donate locally.
For all U.S. donors who participate in the Give One Get One program, T-Mobile is offering one year of complimentary HotSpot access.
It’s called “Give One Get One” and it costs $399, which will be good until Dec 31st. The XO laptops are laptops designed for education and connecting kids in developing countries who have never worked with a computer before.
The energy-efficient computers have hi-res screens, cameras, and p2p wireless communication capabilities built in. They run on free open source software with 1GB flash memory and a low power processor so it can be easily maintained. This unique laptop can be powered by solar energy, a foot pump, or pull-string powered chargers!
Is the Domain Name Jer.net for Sale?
I have receieved a lot of inquiries lately about jer.net, asking if it is for sale. I actually made the mistake of selling it about a year ago, but was then fortunate enough to buy it back again. I have to say it is for keeps this time, unless of course, a really nice offer comes my way.
I have been buying and selling domain names for quite some time, and I really enjoy doing it. The highest offer to date is $3500, which I refused.
Yeah, I know it is a good price for the domain, but I also know the value of three letter domains is on the rise. Besides, this one has a personal value to me, as it is my nickname.
So for now, keep stopping by because Jer.net will be here for a while ;0)
Some Humor: Restroom Etiquette
Everyone needs a good laugh from time to time. Hopefully this does the trick:
During a good manners and etiquette class being held for young children, the teacher says to her students:
“If you were courting a well educated young girl from a prominent family and during a dinner for two you needed to go to the toilet, what would you say to her?”
Mike replies: “Wait a minute, I’m going for a piss.”
The teacher says: “That would be very rude and improper on your part.”
Charlie replies: “I’m sorry I need to go to the toilet, I’ll be back in a minute.”
The teacher says: “That’s much better but to mention the word “toilet” during a meal, is unpleasant.”
Little Johnny then says: “My dear, please excuse me for a moment. I have to go shake hands with a personal friend, whom, I hope to be able to introduce to you after dinner.”
Designer Cats - The Ashera and Ashera GD
Okay, it is 5:30 am and I just stumbled to the cpu to check my email, when I came across a news bulletin at Yahoo about the new “designer cats”, the Ashera.
Being a cat lover, and animal lover in general, this news bulletin caught my eye.
After more research, I am understanding that this beautiful cat is a mix between an African Serval and Asian Leopard cat with a domestic cat. Which, in turns, creates the world’s most expensive hybrid feline, the Ashera.
The Ashera, an exclusive product of Brodie’s firm Lifestyle Pets, resembles a little leopard and can weigh up to 30 pounds. But it’s more suited for lounging than stalking prey. According to the creator, they are very loving and affectionate.
Although an Ashera costs $22,000 (plus $6,000 for the premium placement option which will expedite kitten delivery by about six months) Lifestyle Pets has already sold several cats to customers around the world since it was unveiled in May.
